When I was a kid I built a Tesla coil using a 12kV neon sign transformer which my mom got for me (this was the 1960s, before Americans turned into wimps). At some point I had the transformer sitting on my workbench and plugged in, with nothing connected to the output. The corona discharge made a hissing sound, but I had music on and couldn’t hear it. Perhaps eight inches away was my table radio, which had a metal chassis. I reached between the two to get something, and my arm shortened the air path enough for an arc to form. In my experiences, TRIACs fail shorted more often than explode. We have a failsafe of cutting off a mechanical relay in case it happens. Exploded TRIACs do happen though, in the rare case when the load has high leakage to earth, which we don’t have ground fault detection on our devices at the moment. TRIAC we use is rated for 40AMPS @ 600V though for industrial temperature control applications.

It happens to the best of us. We power up our project and immediately run into issues. Be it spotty communication or microcontroller reset or any number of bugs that have us mystified and picking though our code… only to find that it’s a power supply issue.
