Having a separate wire coming out of the box seems like an extra hazard to me. If you keep the thing self-contained with only mains-in/mains-out, I would think it is safer in the end, and removes the internal complexity of optocouplers.
You can get special ground fault detection switches. The circuit at the output of the isolation transformer should be floating with respect to ground. When they detect an impedance between that circuit and ground below some configurable threshold (sometime 5Mohm) they will switch off the power.
The plug-in Kia Niro has an 8.9 kWh battery (vs. 1.6 kWh in the regular car). You can quickly estimate the amount of kWh you used in the week as long as the battery was fully drained every time you plugged the car in (it’s fully drained if the gasoline engine kicks in) and you know how many times you charged the car.
I do not disagree that this is not the best way to do it. I have only used it for temporary installation, and only when I can frequently inspect everything involved for signs of elevated temperature. At home, I had a licensed electrician install a NEMA 6-50 and a 40A circuit (which we de-rate to 32A for EVSE service) in our garage for our car charging needs.
AC does make you clench. I was unable to let go of some AC transformer wires once for about 10 seconds before I shook free.
I heard from an instructor that some guys from the national power company use full PPE when switching on/off old main fuses in domestic installations (230V, 15 to maybe 60A). These things are fully plastic and can be operated by everyone, so no PPE needed, but it seems like they explode sometimes – maybe because of the dust you mentionned.
This time, though, he says he’ll only change course once the Senate votes on a binding bill. Now, it’s up to McConnell.
Everything industrial is 3 phase though; it’s 240V phase/neutral or 415V phase/phase here though. You can certainly get a 3 phase connection to your house and/or shed though – it costs about $1000 to replace the meter plus a bit more for wiring – if you have a problematic power-tool habit like me.
We teach our employees never to trust anyone concerning lock-out tag-out. Everyone has their own personal lock, and most power sources can accommodate multiple locks. Fortunately you just enjoyed an unusual sensation,
Very nice hack and well documented, safety issues included. For all the rest of the naysayers, you are far more likely to die driving your electric car than from a charger failure yet most people think nothing of jumping in the car despite it being one of the leading causes of death in the US.
As always, in terms of refinement, petrol or diesel drivers need to recalibrate their minds, not least because the near silence (bar wind noise) below 2000rpm stands in contrast to the engine noise that intrudes thereafter. At a cruise the peace is notable, while if you push on the arrival of engine noise is a momentary surprise rather than a permanent irritation. A sub-8.0sec 0-62mph time underlines that this is a reasonably pacy hatch too.
Obviously, I enjoy having the Kia Niro around, either in plug-in or standard hybrid variants. Itâs not a driverâs car by any means, but for a geek who likes plotting fuel spending in Excel, this would have me dancing in my spreadsheets. This Niro PHEV has me studying what it would take to wire a dedicated charging station in my garage in place of that worn 120v socket.
