Pools have come a long way. It used to be you had a pump and if you were lucky it had a mechanical timer switch on it. That was it. Now you have digital controllers and spa jets and heaters. You can even get them that connect to your home automation system. If your pool isn’t new enough to do that already, you can get a range of add-on accessories. For a price. [Rob] paid $500 to get a remote for his pool. It wasn’t even WiFi, just a simple RF remote. In 3 years, the transmitter had burned out ($300 to replace) and he decided he had enough. In my college days, designing stage lighting systems for customers, I had a test rig that I used during a sales presentation. The reason I built this is that a customer had his electrician contracted to do the install work (we didn’t do the electrical install, just specification). When I specified 20 Amp breakers and told the customer that they’d be limited unless they upgraded their service, they told me that their guy had taken care of it.

And now you know why companies react the way they do. It would be like someone going around deliberately ruining your reputation, and there’s little you could do about it.

Yes, agreed, actual power supply design must take into account the allowable possible range of input. My house nominal “240V” supply routinely hits 252V, for example, and is allowed to go as high as +6% (254V).

Yeah, dont use these. Use a relay instead. There is a reason all the high end stuff went away from the Triacs as they will float to full mains voltage when no load is connected and you get electrocuted when you mess with the circuit. AMX, Crestron, Lutron, etc all have moved away from pure Triac control due to this safety issue.

I’m glad you are aware of all of the many issues surrounding this kind of a hack. I spent 15 years as a commercial electrician, so the first thing that I did when I started to read this was think, “Oh, crap. Someone’s going to kill themselves.” I’m glad that’s not the case here.

99% of the time you can’t even begin to sue because fakes were often dumped and mixed in throughout the supply lines so it’s nearly impossible to track it back to the factory that made the fake. And even if you could find the original factory, international lawsuit rarely works out.

In San Diego (where I live) residential electricty rates start at 15 cents per kWh. Lower electric rates are available if you charge the car at night, but you have to agree to pay a crazy-high rate of 53 cents per kWh at other times. That wouldn’t work for me, but YMMV.
