one of my least favorite shocks is a phone ringing. I was fixing a socket one night about 11p and thought ‘no one will call this late’ and didnt bother to disconnect it. got a nice zap from that and the ringing has a nice pulse to it that really gets your jumping.
Please define “chicken stick”. Your story reads as if you were putting state-fair-food into your electrical equipment.
“Engineering types”? – I would suspect business or accounting “types” to be responsible for “saving” on maintenance. Engineers normally know, that maintenance is important.

OK … back to the task at hand. Anyone care to comment on how a toaster oven is wired? How about a thermal blanket? None of these use a 12V or 24V switching power supply brick, so how do they do it???
And another actually bigger reason for using DC instead of AC is when one wants x amount of mega watts of battery backed power, and converting that from DC to AC to DC again is rather inefficient, compared to just sending out the DC directly.
When building my printer, I also didn’t like the then state-of-the-art heated PCBs. Thus, I ordered a bespoke silicone heater mat from China, mains voltage, 400 Watts of heater power. Add an aluminium plate to the top and ground it, and safety will be sufficient. I use an SSR embedded into a wall-wart form factor project case with plenty of snubber circuits. Cons: More expensive than a PCB Pros: Heats up incredibly quickly, reasonably priced, won’t get damaged by prolonged high temperature, easy to make non-life-threatening.
If I remember right Edmund sold a one ton lift magnet that would work with one dry cell. It was about 3 to 4 inches in diameter and half as thick with a single piece of iron with a circular groove for the coil. I saw a similar magnet lift a car at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago decades ago. The trick is perfect flat coupling to a thick flat piece on the load.

There are split-phase premises supplies and three-phase. Split-phase is used for residences and small businesses, and three phase is used for larger businesses and some larger multi-tenant buildings. When using two of three phases, they’re 120 degrees apart and the nominal voltage is 208 volts. When using both sides of split-phase, the two are 180 degrees apart and the nominal voltage is 240 volts. The nominal voltage from one phase to neutral is 120 volts.
Since GM was having troubles with said DOPES regarding the 2011 VOLT, they quickly redesigned the current and all future units to have an AWG #14 connector cord, while keeping the AWG #16 connector cord to the car – why? – so that the oversized connector cord would extract heat from any overheating defective receptacle.
No I don’t want one, because I have a computer museum and I don’t feel the need to instant-wipe all my floppy disks at the flip of a switch.
Can you create, and how safe it would be, isolation transformer with two transformers? so, secondary of first transformer connected to secondary of second (2:11:2) ? In my naive thinking head, it should work. i have few microwave transformers with modified secondary (about 20-30V output from 220V input), and was thinking of using two of them…
