Pedantic FWIW: Afghanistan and North Korea and some banana nations use 110V. USA uses 120V/240V. Japan is the oddball, using 100V. Annoying because you can’t draw more than 1 kilowatt from a socket there (kettle, hair dryer, space heater…). And having lived with the three voltages (100V, 120V, 240V) on four continents, I’ll happily take the 120V supply instead of the 240V.
*My* electricity is cheap (~$0.065/kW), so that 117 miles would cost about $7.61. Gas in my area is down to about $2.70/gallon, so the total fuel cost for those 253 miles would be about $16. Other areas of the country might be higher for electricity and lower for gas.
Tell that to the parents buying baby formula adulterated with melamine. The Chinese have long standing traditions that support cutting as many corners as possible. Basically, cheat until caught. And their government seems to actively turn a blind eye to all manner of this nonsense.
But don’t believe brand names are any better, especially if you buy them from eBay or Amazon! There is too much profit to be made remarking parts to trust any of these type parts from anyone but a major distributor like DIGIKEY or MOUSER Electronics.
I recall doing the exact same as a kid when in france, on holiday. The french also have those so seductive to interested kids 2-Prong plugs with a gap of ‘just’ that size….
They make “plate” heaters that are metal plate looking thing with a couple of stud terminals sticking out of them as well.
In my experience, the more people know about electricity, the more cautious they are. And the more they have to deal with dangerous voltages, the more cautious they are. With few exceptions, most Youtubers you see doing dangerous stuff online have no idea what they are doing. Speak to a decent electrician and you’ll see they work more safely than most engineers and thousand time safer than amateurs. We don’t really need electrical cowboys showing off how dangerous the stuff they do is.
Point is, there are already pretty well established and widely accepted methods for uniform heating. Why re-invent the wheel AND sacrifice safety?
The third apartment I ever rented had ungrounded two-prong outlets in the kitchen, and rather than do the old 3-prong-adapter route for the microwave (the good ones with a green wire to the center screw), I said, “let’s replace the outlet,” I switched the breaker, verified that there was no power with a lamp, and started disassembly…. and the screwdriver arced, Most likely the breaker was on the neutral instead of the hot or something stupid like that. I did one of those “cat with octopus on his face” nope nope nopes, and *carefully* reassembled everything and fetched the darn 3-prong adapter.
No, he is using a MC3041 to drive a BT137 which can handle 8 amps continuously (if properly heatsinked).
Due to its diminutive stature, most photographers will find that the grip only accommodates two fingers, with the index finger resting on the shutter release button above, and the little finger curling beneath the bottom of the camera. This might seem a little crowded, but with the light, plastic-bodied 18-55mm kit lens, handling is nonetheless good, with the combination feeling extremely well balanced. Using larger, heavier lenses, the grip size is too tiring for single-handed shooting, so the photographer’s left hand will need to serve double duty, adjusting zoom or focus while simultaneously taking up the weight of the lens itself.
Even with a large heat sink like that, shrink it to 50mmx100mm and the datasheet lists a max of 10A. With that aluminum plate, I’d be surprised if it could handle more than 5A for a length of time.
