However there is a snag. So please bear this in mind when buying a multimeter or other instrument for use with mains voltages: the cheapest may not be good enough. We have all used £5/$10 bargain meters with our low-voltage analogue or microcontroller work because a flashing LED on a breadboard is hardly hazardous, however for higher voltages those IEC class markings have to come with a believable provenance. Buy the most expensive instrument you can afford from a decent and reputable manufacturer, it’ll keep you safer and you’ll get a top-quality meter that will last you a lifetime.

Under a heavy load, an A/C unit can trip an electrical breaker. Check the breaker box to make sure this hasn’t happened, and also use a multimeter to check the fuses inside the disconnect block next to your air conditioner to make sure they are still functioning. If either of these scenarios appear, there could be an underlying electrical problem with your home’s main box. Have an electrician look at that.

I can’t speak for the ‘3’, but you can – since you can at least compare your cost of charging with the 240 – 250 volt cost in the Tesla Calculator.

It also doesn’t hurt to spend a bit more. I found a 40A SSR, well-known Japanese brand, from a reputable distributor, for $30. That said, I might easily have made this same mistake; thankfully I won’t have to learn the hard way (this time!).

Nissan has said that most people who get their LEAF charging stations installed by AeroVironment will pay around $2,200 to $2,500 in hardware, permits and labor—$750 of which is for the actual charge station hardware. While the pictures are interesting in-and-of-themselves for those of us that care about what happens under the hood of all of our equipment, the bigger question the pictures bring up is what, exactly, you’re paying for when you plunk down your $750 for the hardware.

I would prefer, use a circuit (SCR?) to lower the voltage to around a safer value, where we won’t have any problem in the worse case.

I love the concept and the build. But does potting with epoxy resin have enough strength to hold magnets in place? I did not see any mechanical fastners holding magnets in place . If epoxy cracks I see magnets pulling out of metal bracket and failure .Over to someone with engineering experience please.
